Skiing in the Rhodope Mountains, Bulgaria

A British family of four with two children aged 9 and 11, respectively, decided to go skiing in Bulgaria next winter.

The call

Stanislas called us on time – we had selected a specific time slot on the website – asked the right questions while letting us express ourselves and share our ideas. In about 30 minutes, we created skiing holidays together tailored to our preferences.

We explained that we were used to skiing in the Alps, but we wanted to discover something totally new and original this time. We would like our kids to go to ski school to improve their skills. We also asked to go on an excursion to explore a charming place in the vicinity of the mountain resort.

Stanislas advised us of a lovely ski resort located not far away from Sofia in majestic mountains. The plan was to ski for 5 days including daily lessons for the kids and go on a half-a-day excursion to discover a beautiful monastery. He recommended that we do not rent a car, as the ski lifts could be easily reached on foot from the hotel. As a result, we agreed on planning a two-way private transfer from Sofia airport.

Concerning the accommodation, we wanted to stay at a nice and cosy hotel with an indoor swimming pool.

The reservation

Stanislas emailed us a detailed description of our tailor-made holidays and a quotation the following week. It included all the elements we discussed and agreed upon during our call. He also sent to us useful advice to purchase our flight tickets.

As a result, we approved and signed the quotation electronically and paid a deposit. As soon as we booked our air tickets, we forwarded our flight details to Stanislas so that he could arrange a smooth transfer from the airport. We were looking forward to our skiing holidays!

The preparations

Two weeks before departure, we received a comprehensive travel book setting out the complete itinerary by email. It also included many other things, such as travel advice and recommendations of restaurants and Bulgarian cuisine.

Thanks to a specific reference number sent by Velstana, it was also available online via a link and on a handy free app – that could even be used in offline mode – available for iOS and Android devices.

Trip details

Arrival in Bansko

Upon arrival at Sofia airport, a driver met us with a nameplate. The two-hour transfer to our hotel in Bansko went smoothly. After the hotel check-in, we went to the ski store to collect our ski equipment. We also met with our children’s ski instructors and purchased ski passes. We had a nice dinner in a cosy local tavern in the evening.

Skiing and relaxing in the Pirin mountains

After breakfast, we hopped on the cable car and warmed up on a couple of easy runs with the kids. Then we headed to the meeting point with the ski instructors. While the children were at ski school, we were having fun skiing the nice slopes of Bansko. They were suitable for all levels, with a fair mix of blue, red, and black runs. Every day after the end of ski school, we met with the kids and did one last run all together. We noticed how much progress they had made! After skiing, all the family relaxed at the hotel’s swimming pool and spa centre. Every evening, we had a nice family dinner.

Discovering a gorgeous monastery

We went on an excursion to millenium-old Rila Monastery, decorated with magnificent frescoes and located in the majestic Rila mountains. It proved to be a fascinating visit! The rest of the day, we relaxed and enjoyed the indoor swimming pool and spa centre once more.

Coming back home

A transfer was arranged so that we could arrive at the airport three hours before our flight to have a stress-free return.
